Xarelto gets EU CHMP nod

The EU's CHMP has granted a positive opinion to Bayer for its novel oral once-daily anticoagulant Xarelto (rivaroxaban 10mg tablets) for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement surgery, its first indication.
The product, which is being jointly developed with Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, is now set to follow Boehringer Ingelheim's oral anticoagulant Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate) onto the EU market, as the first products in a new wave of oral anticoagulants being developed for a range of acute and chronic uses and which are expected to change clinical practice. Pradaxa was launched in its first market, the UK, in April following EU approval for the same indication (Scrip Online, April 21st, 2008)...
